Bridge to Somewhere

Photo Artadmin30 September 2009

BackRoads-722-EDIT

I snapped this photo while whipping down the 401 on my way to Port Hope. I’ve always liked the look of this train bridge. It’s near Pickering Ontario, a small city just east of Toronto. The photo’s not great, because it was taken through the windshield of my car, but what can you do.

Bridge to Nowhere

Photo Artadmin30 September 2009

BackRoads-347-EDIT

No, this isn’t Alaska. From a distance it’s really hard to determine why this bridge even exists. A couple of miles up the road lead to the outskirts of Port Hope and the reason for the bridge becomes apparent. It’s near a small subdivision and crosses over train tracks. I really wanted to get a close up of it but couldn’t find a way to get near it. Anyway, in this photo it looks a bit out of place, but I think it works.

Tagging progress…

About photographyadmin30 September 2009

The great photo organization project continues. I’m not in what you’d call a “habit” yet exactly as far as my daily tagging goes. I’m up to 1,691 old photos tagged (out of 35,349). That’s about 4.7%. That’s progress and I’m happy with that for now. Even at that slow pace I should finish within a year.

Two things:

  1. New photos. I forgot that I would still be adding new photos. So the total number of photos is always increasing. I’m working backwards (I’m back to July 2009 right now). But because I keep adding new photos, it’s like taking two steps forward, one step back.
  2. I’m naming people in my photos. What do you do when a person’s name changes? Do you continue tagging them with the old name so you have continuity? Start tagging with their new name and leave the old tags alone? Or retroactively change the old name to the new name?

Baptiste Giabiconi | Karl Lagerfeld |Elle Italie

Photo Artadmin29 September 2009

Quand Karl joue à la poupée, ça donne une série de photos surréaliste !!

Par contre la séance de photoshopage de rigueur à visiblement été oublié pour la seconde photo, sur les jambes de Baptiste allias ‘Ken’.

Gordon’s Block Building, Elora

Elora-446-EDIT

Elora-416-EDIT

Here’s a photo of one of the more dominant buildings in Elora. I can’t say how old it is. In a way it looks pretty new, as if built using reclaimed bricks, but it might be old and the brickwork recently professionally cleaned. Hard to say. UPDATE: A little research uncovered that the flat-iron building was built in 1865 by Andrew Gordon and operated as a hotel (the Dalby House Hotel) for more than 25 years.

This statue is from the graveyard behind the church I mentioned two photos ago. I cropped it substantially and turned it into a black & white. I also added a blur effect to the photo. I think it came out okay.

Wild for Flowers

Photo Artadmin29 September 2009

BackRoads-172-EDIT

I took this photo of wild flowers from atop the big hill I climbed to take some of my panoramic photos. This was about 2/3rds the way to Port Hope. Hope you like them.

CAMERA PURCHASE UPDATE: So I’ve emailed a wish list to two camera shops here in Toronto. Looks like I’ll have a new camera by the end of the week. I’ve decided to go with the Olympus E-620 with a Zuiko 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 Mark II lens. The lens is a nice upgrade from the kit lens. But I’m going to stick with the 40-150mm f3.5-5.0 kit lens for the longer shots. I don’t use zoom enough to justify a high-end zoom. Plus, I simply can’t afford it. I’m choosing the E-620 because it’s the smallest DSLR on the market, and it has an articulating LCD display. I can’t tell you how often I’ve wished for an articulating display so I didn’t have to guess what I was shooting and if it was indeed in focus. I’ll let you know when I actually have the new toy.
