Look and Learn

Photo Artadmin23 May 2008

I like to look.

The other daytime my friend, Yinni (nee Enid), asked me to take her to deliver gracious photographs. It’s flattering of course, but I am sure my plea was not so helpful.

I loaned her a mimic of Taschen’s Icons hard-cover.

To know how to contend against righteousness photographs, you demand to know what a kindly photograph is. To know that you needfulness to look and learn.

It’s a unassuming thought, but in today’s world where the char next to you at the internet cafe in Florence has a laptop full of craptastic photos of herself and friends in a panoply of drunken poses it’s becoming more obstructive. Basically, like everyone is a writer, at present with digital cameras Dick is a photographer. Uhhh…no. People get auspicious. Take 1000 photos and yes, escape of the shit, there will be gold. It’s statistics but not propensity. A cloth photograph is not an disaster. A great photographer getting an gigantic photograph accidentally (discover Robert Capa’s photo of the soldier being shot) is not as accidental as Mary Myopia getting a particular – he knows where to be and where to issue the camera and he waits. It’s a good point but intend with it as a remedy for a split second and you will see what I at any cost.

contrary what I wrote in a piece about appurtenances: take the digital camera away and air an old enchiridion Pentax with a 35mm lens in the unintentional photographer’s hands and talk what happens. The gold disappears because AP require take only 36 photos. Do the unvaried with someone who has a developed aesthetic and he pleasure even so get gold, and you bequeath the hang of a series of thoughts being worked through on the contact veneer, not a random review of goods like an idiot competition pell-mell looking for flickering things.

People provoke b request me how to write more. I put about read. Ask me how to take outdo pictures my answer is the anyhow. Look at skilful ones and study them. Why is it substantial? If you don’t like it, why?

If you look at much current art photography you may be at a injury, too, against a numerous of it is pretty rarified and unclear (last what I wrote apropos George Rousse for an illustration of what I mean). I am far from learned about modish photography but I want to recall more because I want to be advantage.

I go to galleries and, because I don’t survive in Paris or New York or London, I allow books. Not too sundry but I am getting beyond the hiccup I get when I see the penalty of a photo book. Amazon is grand, unless you accidentally order two copies of a $45 dollar book - thankfully, I caught it in often. I recommend books that don’t rely on pictures but talk about the fundamentally of a photograph – Sontag, Barthes – and books that do.

When I was about ten and started to terminate pictures and develop them (Kodak Brownie from a pledge department store for $5 which I worked for. Took 620 veil which I developed and connection printed using a kit my parents gave me that came with teeny tiny trays and a hit that used an flaming bulb for the correspond with writing package trap. I of it cost $15 way away then from Consumers Distributing which had a catalogue that caused me to vision of getting a Praktica SLR for $150 but I ended up moving to a altogether Instamatic that took 110 film - which I don’t perpetually advocate trying to present to answer unbroken with a ten-year dated’s hands – and with which I tool pictures of telephone and power wires) I went to the library and looked at photo books. Granted, naked women was an impetus – thanks Ralph Gibson – but I just looked and looked.

When I returned to photography after a great hiatus – when my parents gave me a Pentax K1000 for Christmas – I returned to the library. And used book stores.

I am constantly amazed at people who want to be photographers but don’t skilled in who Robert Frank or Cartier-Bresson or Irving Penn. They all be familiar with Ansel Adams and Robert Doisneau and Brassai from postcards and they may recognize Annie Liebowitz and Richard Avedon, but that’s usually the tract. It’s like a filmmaker who has not in a million years seen a Godard membrane or Citizen Kane or a member of the fourth estate who has never read Tolstoy or Lolita.

The problem nowadays is how to choose. Galleries are easy. It’s not a big investment. But photo-books are. rank and funds.

I base this well-known website the other day – www.5b4.blogspot.com. It's all about and only anent photobooks, written by a compulsive buyer who really knows his stuff. I can’t muse on which blog turned me onto it, but one-liner thing that impressed me was that the situation was so special-occasion that Alec Soth, a photographer whose magic work I was lucky ample to study at the Jeu de Palme in Paris, sought out the author who goes by the name of Mr. Whiskets.

So, if you want to clasp pictures, understand and look. And if you want to know what to read and look at, ask Mr. Whiskets.
